Entered as a Pro as well as a Pro-Senior, Mike Zaremba of Pueblo, Colorado, won both divisions in the Rotary Desert Sun Golf Classic, played Saturday and Sunday at the Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River. Zaremba shot 65 in round one and 70 in round two for a 135 total. Ralph West of Phoenix also had a big payday, taking second with a 136 in the Pro-Senior division and tying for second in the Pro division; winning $4500. Top amateur player was Joseph Haley of Roswell with a combined score of 137. Theron Loving of Roswell carded his first career hole-in-one on Sunday at hole #4. The Rotary Desert Sun Golf Classic is an annual 36-hole, PGA-sanctioned, pro-am tournament. During its 28-year history the tournament has raised almost $800,000 for charitable causes in Chaves County. This year’s beneficiaries are Los Pasitos Early Intervention Program for children’s evaluation and training equipment, and the Eastern New Mexico State Fair for new LED lighting the junior livestock parking area and Bob Crosby Arena.
The “Sun Classic” is presented annually by the Roswell Rotary Club and the Pecos Valley Rotary Club. Major sponsor of the event is Travis Hicks and Desert Sun Motors of Roswell. Scores of volunteers and sponsors make the event possible.
